Graduate Competencies Medical Knowledge Graduates of the West Liberty University Physician Assistant program will: 1. Practice medicine using acquired skills and knowledge to examine and assess risk factors and medical conditions. 2. Initiate, interpret and analyze appropriate diagnostic studies and physical examinations, with an end to managing, maintaining, and promoting patient health through proper treatment and counseling. Patient Care Graduates of the West Liberty University Physician Assistant program will: 1. Provide patient-centered, age appropriate, evidence-based medicine in a team-oriented, culturally sensitive and equitable manner. 2. Develop and demonstrate current diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, facilitate medical and surgical management plans, and compassionately meet the needs of patients and their families. 3. Partner with patients, their families, and other health care professionals, to provide health care services and education that will enhance healthy lifestyles and promote wellness. Professionalism Graduates of the West Liberty University Physician Assistant program will: 1. Reflect the highest standard of compassionate, ethical, legal and moral conduct. 2. Demonstrate the highest levels of personal integrity and commitment to excellence, respect for other members of the health-care team; and sensitivity and responsiveness to patients’ and patients families’ age, gender and disabilities. Interpersonal & Communication Skills Graduates of the West Liberty University Physician Assistant program will: 1. Effectively communicate with patients and health care professionals to provide therapeutic and ethically sound relationships. 2. Apply an understanding of the ranges of human behavior and respond with resilience, stability, tolerance and empathy. 3. Adapt communication skills to provide effective listening, nonverbal, explanatory, questioning, and written, communication and documentation. Practice-based Learning and Improvement Graduates of the West Liberty University Physician Assistant program will: 1. Assess, evaluate, and improve their patient care practices through the appraisal and integration of evidence from scientific-related studies. 2. Evaluate and appropriately address gender, cultural, cognitive, emotional and other biases; gaps in medical knowledge; and physical limitations in themselves and others. 3. Analyze practice experience and perform practice-based improvement activities using a systematic methodology, in concert with other members of the health care delivery team 4. Apply information technology to manage information, access on-line medical information, and support their own education. Systems-based Practice Graduates of the West Liberty University Physician Assistant program will: 1. Incorporate information technology to support patient care decisions and patient education, and effectively interact with different types of medical practice and delivery systems. 2. Understand the funding sources and payment systems that provide coverage for patient care, and practice cost-effective health care and resource allocation that does not compromise quality of care. 3. Advocate for quality patient care and assist patients in dealing with system complexities. 4. Partner with supervising physicians, health care managers and other health care providers to assess, coordinate, and improve the delivery of health care and patient outcomes. 5. Promote a safe environment for patient care, recognize and correct systems-based factors that negatively impact patient care. |
