SESSION DESCRIPTIONS – Read these first!

This year we are offering 30 unique sessions covering a wide range of media arts and design. The Sessions are listed in chronological order, as they will appear during the day. First read through the session descriptions to determine what you want to see, then go to the 2013 Registration tab to select your sessions.

A * next to the session indicates that it is a “hands on” session.

SESSION  PRESENTER DESCRIPTION
Video Project Planning and Execution Joe Monahan Joe Monahan of Shooters Productions will speak about a few projects that his studio has produced over the last 2 years. Topics will cover planning and execution, as well as common production issues that have to be dealt with along the way. Segments from sample projects will be shown and will include: Body Armor production produced for the National Institute of Justice and an upcoming historical documentary that is currently in pre-production.
* Theater Design: Using SketchUp to create 3D environments for the stage. Spencer Thomas
Clay Dunn
SketchUp is free software that can allow you to create complex 3D spaces, making it a perfect fit for designing theater sets. Come and see how it is done.
3D animation with Lightwave graphics Christian Lee An introduction to Lightwave – The session will concentrate on the use of key framing, texturing, surfacing, and lighting effects. Students will participate in the making of simple 3D animations.
How to be a record producer.  Bobby Oswinski A look at what a music producer does, his responsibilities, and how to become one. Learn some insider tips from a music industry pro.
Mobile recording techniques   Jared Thompson Participants will videotape activities of the MAD festival. The video will be edited and presented during the afternoon at the beginning of the MADFEST competition.
Pittsburgh Portfolio Greg Coll and Doris Short Design a photoshop collage of Pittsburgh while learning about the creative scene and opportunities in the city.
Mixed Media Workshop    Robert Villamagna Award winning assemblage artist Robert Villamagna encourages you to get your hands messy as he leads the class in the construction of a group mixed media project.
Make Your Own Music Software.   Matt Harder  Learning about Graphical Programming Environments for Music
Theater Design – Stage Lighting – Mixing colors for dramatic effect. Nathan Dunn A discussion of how art is used in the theater including set design, costume design, lighting design, hair and makeup.
Contemporary Music Composition for Television Jamie Peck Jamie is an accomplished musician and producer who will be demonstrating how he goes about writing for TV utilizing virtual instruments and computers. He will especially showcase WLU’s studio capabilities.
Self Portraits and image makingwith the I-Pad Brian Fencl Participants will be introduced to image making apps for the IPad while they create a number of photographic self portraits. Students will be able to email themselves the results of their work.
Painting with Light Richard Clifford Richard is a West Liberty student who creates amazing photographs using slow exposures and a wide range of materials including sparklers and glowsticks. He will teach you some of the secrets of his craft.
Portrait Photography  Neal Warren Learn how to set up and create portrait photography from an accomplished professional.

Theater Design – Designing Sound Jake Trifonoff West Liberty student Jake Trifonoff will work from a script to demonstrate how to build audio elements into a production.
Visual effects in Video Production Joe Monahan Joe Monahan of Shooters Productions will speak about visual effects and how they enhance a production. The session will focus on a music video and various commercial productions produced by his studio in which visual effects were used.
Your Design Career – Branding Yourself! Doris Short and Greg Coll Practical information about current trends and hot topics in the world of design and business. The seminar will foster dialog and critical thinking.
Social Media For Musicians  Bobby Oswinski Social Media is allowing artists of all kinds to sidestep traditional roads to success. This session gives helpful tips on how musicians are using social media to promote themselves, their brand and their music. The same techniques can be used to promote yourself in any arts related field.
Radio Broadcasting – The Evolving Medium Jeremy Puglisi“The DUDE” DJ from Eagle 107.5 This workshop is designed to discuss the evolution of radio broadcasting and the tools and skills that will help you break into the business. Jeremy Puglisi brings working experience to the discussion with real world training from Clear Channel Communications and his time with West Liberty’s radio station, WGLZ. Radio may seem to be an outdated medium, but Jeremy explains how its merely changing, not dying.
Theater Design – Blood and Gore Meaghan Macey West Liberty student Meaghan Macey and several assistants will demonstrate how to create realistic injuries using stage makeup. Prepare to get your hands bloody.
*  Simple Screen Printing Martyna Matusiak Learn the fundamentals of screen printing using image transfer techniques.
Producing a live concert at Heinz Hall Joe Monahan

Joe Monahan and Jamie Peck joined forces to create an audio and video recording of B.E. Taylor’s live Christmas show at Heinz hall. They share insights into the details of making a professional live recording.
Gigapan Workshop Lou Karas Learn how to operate a gigapan camera to take an enormous high definition image.
Master Mixing Class Bobby Oswinski (Open only to studio professionals and experienced college students). A master mixing class with a world class professional music producer.
Design Portfolio Review Doris Short and Greg Coll Bring two or three samples of your portfolio work on a flash drive. Your work will be projected onto a screen where it will be reviewed by two accomplished professional graphic designers. You are welcome to join this session, even if you don’t have your own work to present. It is a good chance to witness a professional critique of artwork.
Producing a television show Theresa Gretchen and the WLTV crew. Go behind the scenes to participate in the production of a live television show, broadcast to 100,000 homes via cable television.
Editing with Premiere Jared Thompson Jared will be editing clips taken during the morning of the MAD festival and organizing them into a production that will be shown during the MADfest competition.
